My Experience: Selling To Carmax

This month, I finally said goodbye to my very first car. It was a 2003 Hyundai Accent, a pearl white 2-door hatchback. (I have no idea what that entire car description meant… I just copied it from the website. LOL. Just kidding.) It has been paid off for a long time, but the car was getting old. I would have had to spend $600+ to repair it last summer just so that it would pass a smog check. I decided not to and it had a check engine light (still). On the other hand, I have never got into an accident with it, seats were in good condition, A/C was working, etc.

I chose Carmax because it’s what my parents suggested. (Listen to your parents kids.) The process is really quick and quite easy. I walked in and found someone to appraise my car. They took my car keys and I told them which car was mine. They sat me down in a booth and asked me just a few questions about the car, like if I was ever in an accident and if it was already paid off. They also asked if I was looking for a new car and I said, “No, not right now.” I told them that the check engine light was on, but he (the guy helping me out) said the appraiser would see that and assess it. The whole process took about 20 minutes.

After the appraisal, he gave me a sheet of paper that rated my car in ‘Good Condition’ with my quote on it. I checked Kelly Blue Book for the trade-in value of my car before going and Carmax was offering to pay fairly. I was a happy girl! They DID NOT rip me off. Yay! I went home and didn’t actually sell my car that day. Your quote is good for 7 days; after that, they will have to reappraise your vehicle. I came back to Carmax the very next day. Continue reading

Better file your taxes today…

Taxes are due TODAY people, you better file on time… or at least ask for an extension. It is an amazement to me that people wait this long to file taxes… Ha, just kidding. I’m lazy too sometimes and will do much of anything to procrastinate. I think I had Turbo Tax on hand for about a month before I even installed it..

But, any who… I can’t believe that people who have very simple taxes (one job, don’t own a a property, have some kids) choose NOT to do taxes on their own using software like Turbo Tax. It really makes me want to ask them, “What are you afraid of?” Especially since you have to pay more to have someone at H&R Block do it for you. On the other hand, Turbo Tax costs $40 and the whole family can use it (+$20 for the e-file). Also, if you don’t want to pay for the software, the free edition is available online

Hopefully I can sway you to save money by using Turbo Tax. Here are 10 reasons I like Turbo Tax Deluxe.

  1. Transfer information from your last year’s tax return, which means less stuff to fill out
  2. Ability to e-file (for a fee); no need to print and bring to the post office
  3. Ability to save tax return as .pdf
  4. Step by step; walks you through your entire form w/ yes and no questions
  5. Thorough, easy to understand information
  6. Decides what form you need to fill out for you
  7. Ability to see how your tax return numbers compare to others in America
  8. Helps you file an extension (but I never needed to)
  9. More than one person can use Turbo Tax to file their taxes (separate e-files applies)
  10. Windows and Mac compatible

I got my tax refund already!

This year, I used Turbo Tax Deluxe to file my taxes (why pay H&R Block $50-200+ to do it?). Besides being just easy because the program just asks you simple questions (like a survey), most of the categories (like mortgage, TurboTax Deluxecar registration fees, child income, rentals and royalties, business income, IRA and Pension distributions, children, stocks, employee expenses, etc.) didn’t even apply to me! Plus, Nevada doesn’t require Nevada residents to file a State Tax, just Federal.

I e-filed my tax return (price is $17) on April 14, 2007 (three days before the deadline!) and once I did, the program estimates and lets you know the day you might get your money… , but they were exactly right this time with me! At midnight, I checked my checking account balance, and TADA! [Money in the bank, shorty what you drank?] It took them officially less than two weeks to take my return, go through it, and send me my refund.

Just wanted to let you know Turbo Tax is a good product and that you should NOT be paying those damn H&R Block people to do something so simple for you! (Unless you have a really big business or something like that.) I swear, It took me less than 30 minutes. Moreover, the product is reusable in the same year… so you’re whole family/group of friends can use it. So, pretend that 5 people are gonna file with TurboTax, I got it for $40 on Amazon — that’s only $8 to file your taxes (e-file costs $17, but you can print it & use snail mail)! You have to put in a little work, but it’s for damn sure not $200 worth of work.

Sadly, with all these monies, I am going to pay off my credit cards… not all of ’em, but I still don’t plan on getting anything new, like a Mac =(… oh well. Next time…

Which CS3 set should you buy?

Don’t really know if I want to update just yet. I just bought CS2 about a year ago! If I do, sooner or later, I will probably get the CS3 Design Premium. It doesn’t include all of the programs that used to be in Studio 8, just the two most important ones plus all of Adobe’s originals.

CS3 Design Premium includes the following:

  • Photoshop CS3
  • Illustrator CS3
  • Indesign CS3
  • Acrobat 8 Professional
  • Photoshop CS3 Extended
  • Flash CS3
  • Dreamweaver CS3

The total cost for all that at is $590 w/ free shipping (remember, that’s academic pricing, which means you have to prove that you are a student/educator with a valid ID/transcript/etc.)

Random Thoughts… .002

That when you try to get a house, they check your savings account. Not if you just got one big lump sum in there from a separate source (such as a loan), but the history of it… like if it is growing. My brother suggests I put at lest $25 in there a month and that is what I am gonna do!

Supposedly, you can burn synthetic hair when it is at the ends of your cornrows. I might just go the safe route and boil the ends… I’m scared of fire.

T-mobile is coming out with a sorta new phone in the month of April. It will be dubbed the Sidekick ID, aka SKiD. It won’t have all the special features of the SK3, such as mp3 player, EDGE, camera, miniSD, etc., but will be mostly for AIM, email, and web browsing fanatics. I might get one just because it’s gonna be like $100 after rebates. Pretty cheap and comes in a wide variety of colors, even PINK! Read more about it here.

That you can make a 3D shape in Flash so easily with circles, gradient, and the gradient transform tool. I can’t wait to learn this damn program. My teacher for this class made these intro flash animations for some casinos here in Vegas and was paid at least $1,000 for each of them. He had a big time crunch too, but made about $30,000 in two months. HOLY CRAP! Hopefully, I can be as good as him one day. His website here.

That you get these nasty bumps on the back of your head when you have braids. Although I like braids, bumps are GROSS. My cousin did such a good job, but I had to take em out 5 days after. :::sad face::: (P.S. 1.5 days later, with some Vaseline, they are gone!)

I have to get back in my geisha costume from this past Halloween again on Monday. Doing a Kung Fu movie for my video editing class. Yessir! =) Only girl in a eight person group. What?!

I saw people play Beer Pong for the first time. I thought it would be more exciting. I didn’t see anyone puke. Booooooo!

Roberto’s makes pretty decent chimichangas. They are nice and big and crunchy! They put bell peppers on them, so if you don’t like that, then don’t add them — also, onions and tomatoes. A chimichanga combo is only $6.05+tax and comes with rice & beans. I like the chicken better, but I heard you can get a chicken AND beef chimichanga… Macayo’s has better presentation and it taste somewhat better, but you can’t beat the price at Roberto’s!
